The running calendar

Race season is the cool season

India runs on a winter calendar. From October to February the big city races come one after another — Delhi’s half marathon in the autumn, Mumbai’s marathon in January — and most runners build their year around one of them.

Summer does not stop running, it moves it. From April the serious work happens before sunrise, and in the monsoon the humidity matters more than the distance.

Which means the useful question is rarely when to start. It is which race you are aiming at, and who near you is training for the same one.

Training together

The race is one morning. The training is twelve weeks.

Race day is well organised. The weeks before it are where people struggle: the Sunday long run nobody wants to do alone, the speed session that is easier with someone setting the pace, the taper week when everyone gets nervous together.

A training group that says its pace and distance up front works. “Easy 10K at 6:30 per kilometre” tells you whether you belong; “come for a run” does not.

And after the race, the same people are why you keep running — the group outlives the finish line.

Going together

Getting there is part of the plan

Races start early and the roads close earlier. Sharing the drive, meeting at a known landmark, and having someone to wait for at the finish are small things that decide whether a first race feels good.

Arriving alone is normal. Most runners at a start line came by themselves, and a long run is one of the easiest places to talk to someone new without it feeling like an event.

Common questions

Running in India

Do I need to be fast to join a running group?

No. Good groups state a pace, and easy-pace groups are the most common. Pick one that matches how you run today, not how you hope to run.

How do I find people training for the same race?

Look for, or create, a recurring long run named after the race you are aiming at. People training for the same date find each other quickly that way.

What time do running groups meet?

Usually between 5:30am and 7am, earlier in summer. The heat and traffic decide it more than anyone’s preference.

Is it safe to run with people I have not met?

Join a run with a named host and a public meeting point, tell someone your plans, and make your own way there.

Can I start my own running group?

Yes. Create a recurring activity with a pace, distance and meeting point, and approve who joins. You never have to share your phone number.
