From a Sunday spin to a 200km brevet
Group cycling in India covers a wide range. Most of it is the Sunday morning ride: 30 to 60 kilometres out of the city and back before breakfast.
At the other end are the long-distance riders. Randonneuring — timed brevets of 200, 300 or 600 kilometres — has a real following across Indian cities, and riders often train for their first one together.
In between are the commuters, the weekend climbers and the people who just bought a bike and want someone to ride with.
A group ride works when it says how fast
The question that decides whether a ride goes well is speed. “No-drop ride at 22 km/h” tells you whether you belong; “Sunday ride” does not.
Good groups also name a route, a regrouping point and someone riding at the back so nobody is left behind. That is what makes it safe to turn up when you do not know anyone.
Riding with strangers is normal in cycling: most people find their regular group by turning up to one ride.
Early starts, lights and a plan
Rides start early for a reason — emptier roads and cooler air. Front and rear lights, a helmet and a basic repair kit matter more than an expensive bike.
Tell someone your route, carry water for the conditions, and choose groups that keep to routes they know.
Cycling in India
Do I need a road bike to join a group ride?
No. Many rides welcome any bike in working order. The ride description should say the pace and distance, so pick one that suits your bike and fitness.
What is a no-drop ride?
A ride where the group waits for everyone, so nobody is left behind. It is the best kind of ride to start with.
What time do cycling groups ride?
Usually between 5:30am and 7am, when roads are emptiest and the air is cooler.
Is it safe to ride with people I have not met?
Choose a ride with a named host, a stated route and a regrouping point, wear a helmet and lights, and tell someone your plans.
Can I start my own cycling group?
Yes. Create a recurring ride with a route, pace and meeting point, and approve who joins. You never have to share your phone number.
